The Hilux still looks every bit the part of a proper pickup – bold front grille, chunky bodywork, and plenty of presence on the road. But compared to older versions, there’s a more refined touch to the latest model. Even entry-level trims look solid, but higher specs like the Invincible and Invincible X add some extra visual punch with larger alloys, side steps, and chrome or black exterior details.

Performance and Driving

Under the bonnet, the 2.8-litre diesel engine is the real highlight. It produces 201bhp and up to 500Nm of torque (with the automatic gearbox), which means there’s plenty of pulling power whether you’re towing, hauling heavy loads, or just cruising down the motorway. It’s not the quietest engine out there – you still know you’re driving a pickup – but it feels strong and dependable.

The Hilux sticks with its tried-and-tested ladder frame and rear leaf springs, so don’t expect SUV-like handling. But to Toyota’s credit, the ride comfort has improved noticeably over older models. It soaks up bumps better than you might expect, especially at higher speeds, although unladen rides can still feel a bit firm typical of pickups in general.

Across all trims, the Hilux still focuses on practicality – there are plenty of storage spaces, easy-to-clean surfaces, and a commanding driving position. But higher trims really do make a difference to daily comfort and tech.

As you'd expect from a Hilux, it’s a real workhorse:

Final Thoughts – Is the 2022 Hilux Worth It?

For me, the Hilux has always been about reliability and toughness, and the 2022 version doesn’t disappoint. But it’s also more refined and better equipped than ever, especially in higher trims like the Invincible and Invincible X.

If you’re after a no fuss work truck, the Active will get the job done. For a balance of everyday usability and toughness, the Icon or Invincible are the sweet spot. But if you want your pickup to double as a family vehicle or company car with all the kit, the Invincible X feels genuinely premium.

It might not be as car like as a Ford Ranger Wildtrak or VW Amarok inside, but in terms of reliability, offroad strength, and all round durability, the Hilux still feels like the pickup to beat.
